Recommended Reading: “Will Big Business Save the Earth?”
06Dec09
A reader, Shreyas, sent me an article by Jared Diamond from today’s New York Times. It discusses some of the environmentally friendly initiatives that big businesses are undertaking (like those of Walmart, discussed earlier). Refreshingly, the article also talks about why some companies are taking initiative, and why others aren’t. It’s a excellent article, and I wholly recommend it.
As an interesting coincidence, I was browsing Amazon yesterday and added one of Jared’s most famous books, Guns, Germs and Steel, to my wishlist. I hadn’t heard of him before, but now he’s popped up twice in two days.

Love the blog!! Re: Guns, Germs, and Steel – READ IT! beg, borrow, steal (steel? whatever). Or dollars to donuts its at your local library. No, it won’t change your life; but it is a fascinating perspective on the most sweeping trends of history (e.g. agriculture). Jared somehow manages to make a summary of the entire human history of the planet read like a Grisham thriller. PS. I visit your blog for a good dose of optimism. I need to follow your excellent good example and start injecting more optimism into my own. Regards, “SevenCell”
I’m glad you enjoy my blog, SevenCell. I can’t promise that every post will be optimistic though!
